Shortly after men start showing up under the guise of renting her and her husband Theo's spare room, but secretly hoping to have an affair with the mysterious woman whose underpants captured their lustful imagination. This fast-paced farce is a non-stop stream of witty jokes that poke fun at the uptight bourgeois lifestyle of pre-war Germany and its views of politics and sex within the middle-class.

www.coffeehousetheatre.com

Steady State at the Transac

The Steady State play-reading was a fantastic success. Donations of $2 to Afterglow Theatre and they receive a AMBIGUOUS FRINGE 2011 pin.

A donation of $10 to the company gets them a ticket to one of our shows, and a pin.

Aaron R

Canadian Stage - Festival of Ideas and Creation

Canadian Stage - Festival of Ideas and Creation
New Creations: Innovators Directing Program
Saturday May 21, 1:30 & 4:45 p.m. FREE.

Come watch our adaptation of "YERMA" by stage director, Ingrid Pleitez. Art imitating life. An ear-wig walks into his ear canal, and as he burrows through the cerebral cortex he collaborates with the writer on what qualities make up perfection. Together they become a GOD. The character "Kyle" appears and they put him under a microscope. When the writer and the ear-wig begin to disagree on the events of the story we see the downfall of Kyle. He cannot possibly live up to their idea of perfection, and Kyle feels abandoned by GOD.

Gabriel and the ear-wig have a serious argument about Kyle's sexuality, and survival kicks in, and Gabriel's brain creates the allegory Panic, and she decides to help create a perfect girl for Kyle. The ear-wig and Panic fight about the plan for Kyle, and Panic's character is rejected. The brain reacts with another defense mechanism called Hysteria. This time Hysteria creates a character for Kyle, and Panic sabotages her out of jealousy.

The ear-wig creates one more character, and this one changes everything. Completely.
Irrevocably. Medieval mystery plays, Punch and Judy shows, African myths,
Indonesian shadow puppetry, Native Canadian masks, commedia dell’arte -
all these and more have influenced Clay & Paper Theatre. The company
is built on the accumulative experience of David Anderson - theatre activist,
producer of new Canadian work, and defender of public space since 1969. This is
theatre on the ground, for the groundlings, in the park and on the street. This
is theatre of exaggeration, of giant puppetry, of satire and wit gone awry.
This is a little theatre company asking big questions with humour and
irreverence.

This is Clay & Paper Theatre.

Emperor

Emperor rules
The energy generated by the three performers in Emperor, a work by young company Twitches & Itches, was enough to lift the Theatre Passe Muraille Backspace off the ground by a couple of inches.

Or so it felt in the short piece, adapted by Colin Bruce Anthes from a pair of Majorcan folktales.

Under director Roselie Williamson, the trio played the titular character (Anthes) and his younger relatives, the prince (Aaron Rothermund) and the less clever Pedro (Glyn Bowerman). Stories involving Pedro bookended a longer section in which the emperor and the prince played cat-and-mouse over who would inherit the throne.

The Pedro material proved the more theatrical. The innocent if bungling Pedro, “dim as midnight,” always ignored common sense, mistaking a statue for a man and making a bargain with buzzing flies. The three actors played various human, animal and insect characters with comic zest.

The middle section, packed with too much narrative and stylistically relying on telling rather than showing, didn’t have the same audience draw. Still, Anthes and Rothermund metaphorically circled each other with some elegant parries and thrusts.
Review by

Jon Kaplan
NOW MAGAZINE

Twitches and Itches Theatre Presents
THE EMPEROR FUNDRAISER

A Glamorous Night of Wine, Chocolate Fondue, Steamwhistle Beer, Silent Auction Items and Performances By:

Allison Hogg & Sarah Tompson “I Don’t See Why Not” (Improv)
Zita Nayardy (Dance)
Cristina Taborda (Music)
Ryan G. We strive to keep a minimal approach to props and sets, and instead use a physicality to create the atmosphere. We enjoy working on passionate themes, and want to explore primitive stories with a stylistic approach. Our goal is to produce work that is visually stunning while provoking thought.

Afterglow Theatre members come and go, but we all share a love of local stories, myths, fables, and we are dedicated to producing Canadian work.

History

The first project was to provide a workshop for the Topological Theatre youth acting company while they worked on a cabaret show based on violence. The show was then performed at LKTYP, along with Dead Ahead directed by Ed Roy.

The second project was an ambitious play about a magical world inside the trees of the Dufferin Grove Park. Afterglow Theatre submitted a play wrote by Stephan Roberts to the Cooking Fire Theatre Festival. The play was written to encourage young audiences to seek their ancestry.

The third project “Human Nature” written by Aaron Rothermund will be performed in front of an audience at “Patio Plays.” The festival is produced by Back-Burner Productions, and it will take place August 2009.

The Spire

The story began in a Queen Street walk-in clinic while I was waiting to get blood work. As I waited for the needle I witnessed how a woman behaved when she felt threatened by someone less socially desirable, and how other women reacted to her ability to gain control over the situation. I noticed the characters were alive, and they were sitting in front of me, and they were vibrant. I watched the loneliness of the waiting room pre-occupied with illness. I wanted to show how people could behave in a pressure cooker. The characters are trapped together and socialize as a form of defense. “Human Nature” was first produced at Humber in The New Play Festival directed by Maja Ardal with a wonderful cast! Since then I have re-worked the play, and decided to play one of the female characters. What became interesting to me are the inner lives of these characters – what do they show and what do they hide?

Aaron Rothermund
Afterglow Theatre

Human Nature

Back Burner Productions

Patio Plays 2009
Completely. Irrevocably. Medieval mystery plays, Punch and Judy shows, African myths, Indonesian shadow puppetry, Native Canadian masks - all these and more have been influencing Clay and Paper Theatre Company since its birth in 1994. This is theatre on the ground, for the groundlings, in the park and on the street. This is theatre of exaggeration, of giant puppetry, of satire and wit gone awry. This is a little theatre company asking big questions with humour and irreverence. This is Clay and Paper Theatre.

Clay & Paper’s new bicycle-based theatre project Cyclops: Cycling Oriented Puppet Squad, is a mobile performance squad that animates and energizes environmental and cycling events across Toronto from May to August, bringing theatre and cycling enthusiasm to the unsuspecting public.

As we take our unique brand of theatre to the streets, we develop new performance venues and enliven Toronto ’s public spaces while drawing attention to urban environmental issues and promoting active living. Thanks to funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Cyclops will be bringing the bicycle revolution to the city for the next 3 summers!

City of Wine: Pentheus

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Wo8EvgrqFos/S15llgBMLcI/AAAAAAAAADE/0PIMaTCMJ-Y/s400/Bacchus.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430889895579889090" />
Aaron played Bacchus in Pentheus. margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; ">The Greeks with their all-day tragic festivals didn’t just invent drama. They invented the dramatic cycle, the experience of sitting in a theatre for a long time following one proliferating story. So it’s natural that later playwrights planning marathons should turn to the same material. Ned Dickens, an otherwise untried writer, has devoted seven plays, and 16 years of his life, to retelling the tale of Thebes, a sex-and-blood-drenched saga that peaks in the story of Oedipus but starts generations earlier. All seven are now being mounted in sequence in Toronto, in a kind of super-workshop, by seven different theatre schools from around the country, under the auspices of the professional company Nightswimming. It’s a dizzyingly ambitious feat of producing and, despite inevitable unevenness in writing and production, a dizzying achievement.

Pentheus (from Humber), the second play and the most impressive of the five I saw in preview this week, shows us the founding couple advanced in years and disillusion as their town, and especially its women, are possessed by the newly born god Dionysus, here called — with surprising inconsistency — by his Roman name of Bacchus. He brings wine, which becomes the city’s staple product and cultural identity; the lower orders are especially fond of it. This is the story told in Euripides’ Bacchae, culminating in the dismembering of Pentheus, the immature new king, by his own crazed mother.

The plays are written in verse, mainly blank: a sensible decision, but a perilous one. Iambic pentameter is an inherently conversational medium, but no dramatists since the Elizabethans have been able to use it unselfconsciously. When Dickens feels a lyrical lament coming on, the air turns fanciful and unconvincing. But he can also hack out a biting one-liner; when Pentheus calls the gods “pathetic pouting mockeries of man” he has a point, especially about Bacchus. They’re us at our worst, irresponsible because immortal. Ancient Greek theology is terrifying and convincing.

The stagings vary in style and accomplishment. Many actors double as musicians. One play features a hero who plays the lyre, which seems to be what we moderns call a mouth organ. Another features a Ukrainian folk band. A third obscures much vital exposition, by singing it over clangorous homemade accompaniment. Some directors put their performers in exposed positions, physically and emotionally, without giving them much support. But one production, Tatiana Jennings’ Humber Pentheus, is astonishing, from its initial display of rhythmically shuffling divinities, chanting in amplified whispers. It has a sound score by the great Richard Feren, and choreography (by Sharon Moore) whose hypnotically measured frenzy helps both author and actors to go head to head with Euripides’ masterpiece and survive. Its Bacchus (Aaron Rothermund) is properly, and unnervingly, faun-like, while if there were a professional production tomorrow this Pentheus (Colin Bruce Anthes), rash, uptight, spooked by sexual uncertainty, could go into it undaunted and unchanged.

City of Wine closes May 9 at Theatre Passe Muraille.
